Pests and diseases

Listed here is every problem for which the sources name this plant as a host. The problems are not listed in order of how common they are.

Rodents and birds at the bulbs

pest
Signs
Freshly planted bulbs are dug up and scattered over the bed or vanish without a trace. In spring nothing comes up in that spot. Birds rummage through freshly worked soil, rodents carry off the whole bulb.
Prevention
Bulbs are most vulnerable in the first few weeks after planting, until they take root. Lay a metal mesh over the bed or over the pot and take it off once the leaves come through. Level the planting spot and leave no husks or leftovers on the surface. Rodents leave daffodils alone, so plant them among the more popular bulbs.
What to do
A mesh over the planting spot is the only measure.

Narcissus bulb fly

pest
Signs
The bulb sends up no flower, only a few grassy leaves, or it does not come up at all. Cut open, the bulb is eaten out inside and full of muddy droppings, with a fat whitish larva in it.
Prevention
The fly is on the wing from the middle of May into June and lays its eggs at the neck of the bulb in warm, sheltered spots. After flowering press the soil down around the leaves, so that the way to the bulb closes. Plant in more open and shadier places and buy healthy stock. Treasured bulbs can be covered with fleece during the flight.
What to do
Dig up and remove affected plants before the larva pupates. The source names no product.
